Our massage center in Neuchâtel explains sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, and when it is compressed or irritated, it causes a condition called sciatica. It is commonly referred to as “sciatica” and is responsible for severe, disabling pain.
In this article, OLISTIK MASSAGES NEUCHÂTEL provides advice and massage techniques to help relieve you if you suffer from sciatica.
What is the sciatic nerve?
The sciatic nerve is the main nerve in the human body. It originates from the 4th lumbar vertebra, passes through the gluteal muscle, and extends all the way down the leg to the tip of the little toe. At the knee, the nerve divides into two branches:
- The common fibular nerve
- The tibial nerve
And sciatica?
Sciatica is caused by compression and/or inflammation of the sciatic nerve.
The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc, which compresses and inflames one of the roots of the sciatic nerve.
There are also other causes that can lead to the onset of sciatica:
- The compression of the vertebrae;
- Osteoarthritis in the lumbar vertebrae;
- The presence of a tumor near (or on) the spine;
- Diseases.
In general, sciatica manifests as an electric shock-like sensation and sharp pain starting from the lower back and radiating down to the feet. Sitting increases the pain, and to relieve it, it is recommended to lie down.
Other symptoms may appear, such as tingling or numbness.
Some tips to relieve sciatica
To relieve the pain, we recommend using a cold pack, applying it regularly to the painful area.
It is also advised to sleep on your back; lying on your stomach should be avoided! Do not cross your legs when sitting, and make sure to sit up straight.
You can also try stretching exercises to relieve pain caused by sciatica. Here is an example of an exercise:
Lie on your back and grab your left thigh with both hands (your hands should be placed behind the knee), then cross it over your right leg. Hold this position for a few seconds and then do the same with your right thigh. Repeat this action at least 3 times on each side. You can ask your massage therapist in Neuchâtel, who will advise you on the movements to perform. The coaches at Nessfit can also take over for more advanced coaching.
Treating Sciatica with Massage
It is possible to relieve your pain through massage. For this, you have two options: either you make an appointment with a masseur who will provide you with appropriate care, or you practice self-massage.
Here are examples of massages you can do yourself:
- The tennis ball
If the pain is not too severe, use a tennis ball to massage your pelvis.
- Essential oils
A circular massage with essential oils can greatly soothe your pain. Preferably use arnica oil and wintergreen oil.
- To relax the calf
Place your leg on a slightly elevated surface and massage it, then continue the massage at the toes.
Take care of your pain
Sciatica is very debilitating and painful, but don’t despair. It is possible to relieve it effectively while it fades away on its own. Take it easy, enjoy massages, and in some time, it will be nothing but a bad memory.
