Which massage techniques are the most well-known?
When you go to get a massage at a therapy center, you fully trust your practitioner. You know they are using appropriate techniques with well-known names: percussion, palpation-rolling… But what exactly do they involve? How are they performed, and what are they for?
In this article, I will talk to you about famous and frequently used massage techniques.
Introduction to the most well-known massage techniques
I will introduce to you the most well-known massage techniques in the field of body care.
- Kneading
As a professional masseur, I use the kneading technique in the following cases:
- To restore flexibility to your skin: under the effect of the massage, it regains tone and elasticity.
- To promote muscle relaxation: kneading helps release your muscles.
This technique is performed on the larger areas of the body, with the goal of kneading a large fold of tissue. During the kneading session, my hands grab the fleshy part of the muscles, press, lift, and knead them.
It is because it works deeply that the muscles are able to regain their flexibility.
- Effleurage
I practice effleurage at the beginning or end of a session. This method is a standard part of a massage as it primarily serves as a gentle way to make contact. This allows the recipient to relax and get accustomed to the massage, as sometimes the first touches can trigger an uncontrollable nervous reaction, similar to tickling.
To perform effleurage, I place my hands (previously warmed) flat on your skin, following the contours of your muscles. I then gently and slowly glide them over your dermis, allowing you to relax.
The “palper-rouler”
This technique, you’ve probably heard of it, especially if you’re a woman! In fact, the “palper-rouler” technique is often mentioned when discussing methods to fight cellulite. Through its action, it helps combat water retention and assists in eliminating the unsightly “orange peel” skin.
The “palper-rouler” technique is primarily performed on the hips, buttocks, thighs, and stomach. It involves pinching a fold of skin between the fingers and rolling it. However, it’s important to listen to your body to avoid causing any pain.
- Percussion (or tapping)
This particularly invigorating technique is frequently used, most often at the end of a session, to help the recipient gradually wake up. Its action tones the tissues and stimulates blood circulation.
I perform percussion with clenched fists or with the edge of my hands, tapping at a slow rhythm on the most fleshy areas of the body.
Famous massage techniques to try!
Among the various well-known massage techniques, I could also mention friction, smoothing, or pressure. These methods are known because they are systematically practiced during a professional massage due to their benefits and the well-being they provide.
Now that you have a clearer idea of their functions and how they are performed, all you need to do is come and try them to enjoy their benefits.
